Benefits of Omega 3 Oils For Psoriasis

If you suffer with any form of psoriasis, than you know how frustrating this disease can be.  Psoriasis can be genetic or caused by other means, and is considered an autoimmune disease.

Psoriasis runs in my family.  My mother has battled this disease most of her life.  Than my little sister broke out with psoriasis at the age of 5.  I have struggled with psoriasis on the scalp.  And now my daughter also broke out at age 5.  It was interesting when I first took her to the doctor for diagnosis.  I was told children do not get psoriasis, only eczema, by the pediatrician.  But then the allergist confirmed that she indeed did have psoriasis, which we already knew.  And when you look online, childhood psoriasis is more common than you think.

No one really knows why the body begins to attack itself.  Or why the immune system goes in to overdrive.  But there are many ways to treat autoimmune diseases naturally, and it is possible to reverse and stop the disease in its tracks.  Actually curing an autoimmune disease does require dedication and persistence on the part of the person who has the disease.  It is not always fun to do what is right for our bodies.

Omega-3 Oils Decrease Inflammation

Omega-3 oils are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and benefits.  Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation. The body thinks that it needs to lay down more skin cells and does so at a rapid rate leading to a build-up of skin, or a psoriasis plaque, that is inflamed.

In order to treat this disease naturally, you must get control of the inflammation in your body.  “Research studies conducted in animals and humans showed the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, coronary heart diseases and inflammatory bowel disorders.”

How Do You Get Omega 3 Oils In Your Body?

You can get omega 3 oils within your diet. Dietary sources include fish, vegetable oils, and nuts. Fish sources include salmon, tuna, and mackarel. The omega 3 oils that you get from fish are known as omega 3 EPA or DHA. EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA stands for docosahexanoic acid.  Oils and nuts provide other sources of omega 3 fatty acids.

Specifically for inflammation, it is recommended that you get the omega 3 EPA or DHA in the amount of 2-3 grams per day, 1 gram would be the minimum for health benefits. When battling inflammation that is seen with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, it is recommended you supplement up to 3 grams, but do not exceed 3 grams per day.  This can be obtained by supplementing with an omega 3 supplement.  You will have to read the label to determine how many capsules a day will provide you with 3 grams per day.

Omega 3 oils will benefit you by decreasing the inflammation in your body and will also improve your overall health. Other benefits of omega 3 fish oils include:

  • help to regulate the levels of cholesterol in our bodies;
  • improve the overall body composition;
  • improve the neuronal health of the brain;
  • help in mood stabilization;
  • reduce the risk of depression, and anxiety;
  • possess a neuroprotective action with the CNS disorders, such as the Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Schizophrenia;
  • help prevent secondary cardiovascular disease;
  • help to reduce high blood pressure;
  • slow prostate, colon and breast cancer growth;
  • help prevent coronary heart disease;
  • help with varicose veins (circulatory blood disease);
  • help with heart attack prevention;
  • help with rheumatoid arthritis;
  • help with stroke prevention;
  • improve the blood flow in the arteries;
  • help to prevent memory loss in the later years;
  • improve poor learning and focus abilities.

We utilize omega 3 oils in the treatment of our daughters psoriasis daily.  This is just one of the natural treatment that we use with her.  We found a liquid lemonade flavored supplement that she willingly takes daily.

Psoriasis is a battle that you can win.  You must provide your body with natural resources to help your body to function optimally and to decrease the autoimmune process taking place.  But even if you are not battling psoriasis or other inflammatory conditions, omega 3 oils will provide you with many health benefits.  Research studies confirm that you will benefit with your health!
